Older is not always better, and newer is not always better. Within churches today, there is always a new fad, new movement, new book or new model for growth (e.g., purpose driven, simple, house church, etc.), and implicit in each is the idea that everything before, even what was new and hot 5 years ago, was off track. Many a young pastor today presumes most things that were done in churches not too long ago need to be discarded simply because those things are not new. At the same time, far too many churches are dying on the vine as the pastor and congregation grow old together, never changing in any way and never reaching the next generation so that the church would continue. These issues produce all kinds of conflict and everyone has an opinion. The Bible plainly teaches that we need to see what God is doing and go with His plan. Such was the case with the first century Jewish Christians to whom Hebrews is addressed. They faced the choice of the old and the new, but only one was what God was in. Yet we can imagine the allure of the old, sewn into their very culture, and how easy it may have seemed to go back. The author of Hebrews shows them that the Melchisedecan priesthood of Jesus and the New Covenant was always the plan, and now was the time so get on board with what God is doing no matter the cost.
